Over 100 People Benefit From Welfare Aid
At least 140 people have benefitted from a welfare aid initiative rolled out by the Sierra Leonean government early this December.
The aid saw each beneficiary receiving Le 1,300 as welfare grant at the Ministry of Social Welfare in New England Ville, Freetown.
Speaking to beneficiaries at the ceremony, the Ministry’s Director of Family Welfare, Rokie Conteh said that the funds were provided to support families and homes that are vulnerable or facing difficulties. The Director added that the funds are provided to family heads to use as a startup to a small business which will further help them take care of their families.
Melrose Karminty, Minister of Social Welfare affirmed their commitment to provide such funds for vulnerable families. She said that families that benefitted from the funds come from deprived areas in communities in the Western Area including Kissy Dock Yard, Kroo Bay, Rokel, Waterloo, Shell and Eastern Police communities.
“This initiative will be replicated in communities right across the country in the coming year,” Minister Karminty promised.
The beneficiaries including Yama Samura and Mohamed Kabia appreciated the ministry’s effort and made commitments to put the funds to good use.
