Marie Stopes Sierra Leone has successfully engaged local school health clubs in Kailahun to promote awareness of Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). The initiative aimed to educate teenagers about family planning and the risks associated with early sexual activity.
Speaking to SLBC Kailahun, Adama Doncas Koroma, the Regional Integrated Marketing Lead, highlighted the importance of this engagement. Four school health clubs—NSSK, MSSK, LIA, and Ahmadiyya Secondary Schools—participated alongside their mentors, emphasizing a collaborative approach to education.
Koroma stated that the organization recognizes the need to involve teenagers in discussions about SRHR. “We want to educate them on the importance of safe sex, family planning, and the dangers of teenage or unwanted pregnancies, as well as the effects of unsafe sex that can lead to STIs,” she explained.
The event featured several presentations covering critical topics such as early marriage, teenage pregnancy, and various family planning methods. Marian Ngobeh, one of the presenters, focused on the abstinence method, urging participants to prioritize their education over sexual activities.
The attendees expressed their gratitude to Marie Stopes for this timely initiative, acknowledging its benefits. Many participants committed to sharing the information with their peers, extending the reach of the important messages discussed.
Mr. Musa, a mentor from one of the school health clubs, addressed the challenges faced in the community regarding SRHR education. He noted the impact of perceptions, traditions, and religious beliefs on their efforts. Musa encouraged parents to engage their children in early discussions about sexual health, which can foster a better understanding of their sexual rights.
He describes this initiative by Marie Stopes Sierra Leone as a significant step towards empowering teenagers in Kailahun, equipping them with knowledge and resources to make informed decisions about their sexual health.
