A letter circulating on social media appears to show that the current Ombudsman of the Republic of Sierra Leone has tendered his resignation just hours after President Julius Maada Bio announced the appointment of a new Ombudsman raising eyebrows and sparking widespread speculation.
Dated 18th July 2025 and addressed to President H.E. Rtd. Brig. Dr. Julius Maada Bio, the letter is purportedly signed by the outgoing Ombudsman and cites Section 5(2) of the Ombudsman Act No. 2 of 1997 as the legal basis for his resignation. The resignation is stated to take effect from 31st July 2025.
In the letter, the official describes it as an “honor to serve as the 5th Ombudsman,” highlighting a commitment to “upholding administrative justice, promoting good governance, and safeguarding the rights of ordinary citizens.” The resignation, according to the letter, follows “careful reflection and a deep sense of duty,” suggesting a voluntary step aside to allow for renewed leadership.
While no specific reasons were cited beyond the call for leadership transition, the timing of the letter has fueled public debate coming amid increasing scrutiny of appointments to independent oversight institutions.
The letter also expresses appreciation to various stakeholders, including the President, Members of Parliament, the Civil Service, and international and civil society partners. It concludes with a reminder of Section 6(1) of the Ombudsman Act, which outlines the procedural steps for appointing a successor.
As of the time of publication, there has been no official confirmation from State House or the Office of the Ombudsman regarding the authenticity of the letter or the resignation it appears to convey.
