The Sierra Leone Police (SLP), in collaboration with the Corporate Affairs Directorate, successfully conducted a two-day training program for Local Unit Commanders (LUCs) at the Police Headquarters, Senior Officers’ Mess in Kingtom.
The initiative aimed to address identified gaps in police division management following a comprehensive Needs Assessment carried out by both directorates.
During the opening session, the Head of Training, DSP Alpha Kamara, expressed confidence that the training would significantly enhance the capacity of LUCs to serve effectively within their jurisdictions, emphasizing the importance of continuous learning and adaptation in the evolving landscape of policing.

In his keynote speech, the Director of Training, AIG Andrew Mustapha Kamara, affirmed the necessity for LUCs to be proficient in management report writing and community policing.
He stated, “One key area that precipitated the training has to do with the SLP Strategic Development Plan (SDP). You, as commanders, need to be knowledgeable on developing reports content for management consumption as shared by Divisional Information Officers.”
Kamara also asserted the importance of Police-Military Cooperation (POMIC), urging every LUC to familiarize themselves with the heads of various security agencies operating in their areas to ensure effective collaboration during operational activities.

He remarked, “Nobody has monopoly over knowledge. Learning should be a part of us. Learn as much as you can; ask as much as you can; and contribute as much as you can.”
The training covered a variety of essential topics, including Ethics and Professionalism, Community Policing for LUCs, Challenges and Benefits of Report Writing, Basic Report Writing Techniques, Emotional Intelligence, Police/Military Cooperation, Strategic Leadership, and Stress Management.
Kamara concluded by reiterating that Ethics and Professionalism are core values, particularly during the SLP’s transition from a force-oriented to a service-oriented institution.
