Sierra Leone’s President, Dr. Julius Maada Bio, has appointed Mr. Umar Fuad Bawoh as a Member of the National Youth Commission (NYC), according to an official letter from the Office of the President.
The letter, dated August 21st, 2025, states that the appointment is made “in accordance with Section 3 (2) of the National Youth Commission Act, 2009.” President Bio has selected Mr. Bawoh to represent the Western Area on the commission, subject to the approval of Parliament.
“I have the honour to inform you that in accordance with Section 3 (2) of the National Youth Commission Act, 2009, it has pleased His Excellency the President, Brig. (Rtd.) Julius Maada Bio to appoint you as Member, National Youth Commission (representing the Western Area), subject to the approval of Parliament,” the letter, signed by Secretary to the President, Barba B. Fortune, reads.
The National Youth Commission is a crucial government body tasked with addressing the needs and concerns of the youth population in Sierra Leone. The appointment of Mr. Bawoh, who currently serves as the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Youth Affairs, is expected to bring valuable experience and perspective to the commission’s deliberations.
The letter advised Bawoh to “contact the Clerk of Parliament who will arrange a meeting with the Committee on Appointments and the Public Service of Parliament to consider your appointment.” Following the approval by Parliament, “further details, including the Terms and Conditions of your appointment will be communicated” to Bawoh.
The appointment of Bawoh to the National Youth Commission is seen as a move by President Bio to enhance youth representation and address the concerns of the country’s young population.
