Sierra Leone’s Chief Justice, His Lordship Honourable Justice Komba Kamanda, has denied granting bail to Mohamed Kelleh Mansaray and Saidu Kuyateh upon their arraignment before the Court for the offence of Conspiracy to commit Migrant Smuggling and Migrant Smuggling.

The decision followed the official launch of the 2024 Criminal Procedure Act, marking the official opening of the September Criminal Session. The two defendants were charged contrary to Section 20(1) of the Anti-Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Act, No. 12 of 2022.

During the opening, the Hon. Chief Justice commenced proceedings into seventy-five (75) criminal cases that were committed for trial at the High Court, among which were charges of treason, eight (8) murder charges, and four (4) on unlawful possession of drugs, among others.

Taking over from the Chief Justice, presiding Judge Hon. Justice Alfred T. Ganda (JA) sentenced ten accused persons who pleaded guilty to various charges brought against them. Among them were Robert Moiforay, who was sentenced to one 1 year imprisonment for the offence of larceny, Abdulia Kemokai, sentenced to two and a half years for House Breaking and Larceny, Emmanuel Komba, sentenced to three years for House Breaking and Larceny, Thaimu Bangurasentenced to five years for fraudulent conversion and obtaining money by false pretence and Ansu Kallon, sentenced to one year imprisonment for larceny from the person.

Also, the Hon. Justice A. T. Ganda sentenced Mohamed Gblato to two years’ imprisonment for store breaking and larceny, and Hassan Bangura to two years’ imprisonment for fraudulent conversion. Equally so, Kojo Suliaman Janny was sentenced to two years imprisonment for store breaking and larceny. AlieMusa kamara was sentenced to time spent and was asked to pay compensation in the sum of one hundred thousand new Leone to the complainant.

The ceremonial function by the presiding judge involves the assignment of cases to their respective trial judges.
