The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has reaffirmed its decades-long partnership with Sierra Leone during a high-level meeting between its Country Representative in Iran and the Sierra Leonean envoy.

In a courtesy visit to Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Iran, His Excellency Salamu Koroma, UNFPA Representative Mr. Ohashi Keita commended the Ambassador for his proactive diplomatic efforts and explored avenues for deeper collaboration.

Mr. Keita highlighted the organization’s five-decade partnership with Sierra Leone, underscoring its ongoing technical support for programs in sexual and reproductive health, gender equality, population management, and youth empowerment.

“He reaffirmed UNFPA’s commitment to further strengthening these areas of cooperation,” a statement from the meeting noted.

In response, Ambassador Koroma expressed his appreciation for the visit and reiterated his readiness to work closely with UNFPA on matters of mutual interest. He acknowledged the vital role the organization plays in advancing reproductive health and addressing demographic challenges, which he stated remain central to Sierra Leone’s national development agenda.

The Ambassador also took note of Mr. Keita’s Japanese nationality, extending gratitude to the Government of Japan for its ongoing support to Sierra Leone through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Mr. Keita expressed delight at the strong bilateral ties between Japan and Sierra Leone and reaffirmed the commitment of both Japan and UNFPA to strengthening cooperation with African nations.

The meeting concluded with both parties expressing optimism for a strengthened partnership in the years ahead.
