The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has raised serious safety concerns following a recent structural risk assessment that found the Sierra Leone Commercial Bank (SLCB) building on Wilkinson Road to be in critical condition and at risk of collapse.
The seven-storey building, located at the busy Wilkinson–Aberdeen Road intersection, shows significant deterioration, including large cracks, damaged beams, and widespread water seepage all indicating severe structural instability.
The NDMA’s Directorate of Risk Reduction and Preparedness conducted the urgent assessment after receiving multiple reports of visible damage to the structure, which houses numerous staff and receives frequent visitors.
“The current state of the building, coupled with the number of people who use it daily, demands immediate attention to guarantee public safety,” said Ing. Maada Salia, NDMA’s Director of Risk Reduction and Preparedness.
During the inspection, the NDMA team met with the building’s resident engineer, Noel Domigo, who confirmed that plans for complete rehabilitation are underway. He noted that interim safety measures including partial relocation and restricted access to high-risk areas have already been implemented.
Occupants of the building have been informed of the potential risks and advised to take precautionary steps while full-scale repairs are being prepared.
Vamba Ansumana Konneh, Senior Communications Officer at the NDMA, emphasized that the agency’s mandate goes beyond disaster response to include prevention and preparedness.
He urged all property owners to conduct regular structural assessments to safeguard lives and ensure infrastructure resilience.
