A tragic accident has left one passenger dead with several others suffering from severe injuries at Makari Village in northern Sierra Leone.

Reports indicate that the vehicle was travelling from Makeni to Bo when it veered off the tarmac and somersaulted into a murky plain.

While first responders confirmed one dead, several others are believed to be receiving treatment in Makeni.

The latest crash adds to a growing number of fatal road accidents across Sierra Leone, many of which have been linked to speeding, poor road conditions, and mechanical failures. Highway patrol units have repeatedly warned commercial drivers about reckless overtaking, overloading, and the lack of regular vehicle maintenance.

Authorities also cite inadequate driver training, weak enforcement of traffic regulations, and the absence of proper road signage as contributing factors. In rural areas, poorly lit highways and deteriorating road surfaces continue to increase the risk of night-time collisions.

With the holiday season approaching, a period known for increased travel and higher accident rates. Transport officials are urging motorists to exercise caution, ensure vehicles are roadworthy, and adhere strictly to speed limits to help reduce the alarming frequency of road tragedies in the country.
