The First Lady of Sierra Leone, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, was on Saturday, 6 December 2025, reportedly prevented from entering the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) national headquarters in Freetown after the building was found locked with a chain ahead of the SLPP National Women’s Annual Conference.
Witnesses who arrived for the event said the office was “totally empty,” and party members who gathered outside confirmed they had no information about who locked the building or who held the key.
The unexpected closure temporarily halted preparations for the women’s conference, which was scheduled to honor President Julius Maada Bio for what party members described as his continued support for women.
Later in the day, the office was reopened, allowing attendees to enter the building and proceed with the conference. The event went ahead in a celebratory atmosphere and was attended by the First Lady alongside other SLPP stakeholders.
Speaking during the gathering, the party’s Public Relations Officer, Moses Mambu, expressed strong dissatisfaction over the earlier closure of the office, which he said prevented the First Lady from accessing the venue.
Mambu praised President Bio for his contributions to women’s empowerment, education, and national development and insisted that “nothing can stop them from celebrating President Bio and Fatima Bio on their long-standing commitment to development.”
Despite the initial disruption, the conference concluded successfully, with party officials and supporters framing the day’s outcome as a reaffirmation of unity within the SLPP.
