At least five people are feared dead following a ghastly road accident involving a passenger bus travelling from Kono to Freetown along the Kono–Makeni highway on Saturday afternoon.
The bus, operated by Sierra Star Transport Company, reportedly skidded off the highway and plunged into a nearby bush under unclear circumstances. An eyewitness at the scene attributed the crash to overspeeding, a recurring factor in many fatal road accidents across the country.
Although official figures are yet to be released, unconfirmed reports suggest that several passengers sustained injuries. Victims were said to have been rushed to nearby health centres for medical treatment as emergency responders and residents assisted at the scene.
The incident comes barely two days after another tragic accident along the Kabala–Makeni highway, where a passenger bus reportedly somersaulted, killing several people and leaving many others injured. The back-to-back crashes have heightened public concern over road safety, particularly the condition and regulation of public transport vehicles.
The latest tragedy has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations, routine checks to ensure public vehicles are roadworthy, and tougher action against reckless driving. Road safety advocates are urging the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA) and the Sierra Leone Police to intensify monitoring of commercial transport operators to prevent further loss of life on Sierra Leone’s highways.
