The Ministry of Health and Sanitation on Monday, January 12, 2026, conducted a comprehensive assessment of a 100-bed health facility in Port Loko Town as part of preparations to make the facility operational.

The assessment was led by the Senior Permanent Secretary, Mr. Andrew L. Sorie, and included the Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer, Dr. Patricia Bah; Deputy Chief Medical Officer-Clinical Services, Dr. Mustapha S. Kabba; Deputy Chief Medical Officer-Public Health, Dr. Alie H. Wurie; and the Director of Hospitals and Ambulance Services, Mr. Ibrahim Foday-Musa, along with other senior ministry officials.

They were joined by the District Medical Officer for the North-West Region, Dr. Yillah; the Medical Superintendent of Port Loko Regional Hospital, Dr. Yusuf Tejan; and nursing staff.

The facility, constructed by Weather haven of the United Arab Emirates during the COVID-19 outbreak, previously served as a treatment centre for the North-West Region. Following the emergency response, it was formally handed over to the Government of Sierra Leone through the Ministry of Health.

During the visit, the ministry’s leadership carried out a detailed technical and operational review to determine how the facility could be utilized from February 2026. It was agreed that services would initially begin with 40 beds dedicated to internal medicine, with a phased expansion toward full hospital operations.

Given that the facility has been non-operational for more than two years, the Ministry also resolved that a team of biomedical engineers and contractors would assess the medical equipment, electrical installations, and water supply systems before services commence.

The assessments are intended to ensure the facility is safe, fully functional, and capable of delivering quality healthcare services to residents of Port Loko District and the wider North-West Region.
