A serving police officer, Jonathan Vandi Bakundu, has reportedly emerged as the Best Overall Graduating Student of Eastern Technical University of Sierra Leone in Kenema, graduating with an outstanding Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.93 from the Department of Social Work.
According to information from the university, Bakundu achieved the highest academic distinction among his graduating cohort, a feat that has drawn attention both within the academic community and the Sierra Leone Police. His performance reflects what the institution described as “excellence, hard work, consistency and unwavering commitment” throughout his course of study.
Mr. Bakundu is a proud alumnus of the Government Secondary School, Kenema, where he completed his secondary education before proceeding to Eastern Technical University. During his time at the university, he was actively involved in student leadership, serving as Student Union President, President of the Society of Social Engineers (SOSENG), and Class Representative from his first year through to his final year, according to records from student leadership bodies on campus.
Beyond his academic and leadership roles, Bakundu is also a serving police officer, a role in which he is described by colleagues as disciplined and committed to national service. His ability to balance demanding academic responsibilities with professional duties in the police force has been highlighted by peers and university officials as a key aspect of his achievement.
University sources noted that his emergence as Best Graduating Student reflects the institution’s commitment to academic excellence and the growing contribution of security personnel to higher education in Sierra Leone. The achievement has also been welcomed by members of the university community, who described it as well deserved.
