The Vice President of Sierra Leone, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to education, promising the construction of an ultra-modern digital laboratory at Eastern Technical University (ETU) in Kenema.

Dr. Juldeh Jalloh made the announcement while addressing graduates at the ETU Convocation Ceremony, where he also presented a new bus to support student transportation. Speaking on the theme “Leadership and Empowerment in the 21st Century,” the Vice President emphasized that education is a key pillar for national empowerment and sustainable growth.

He affirmed the Government’s achievements in expanding access to education, noting that between 2018 and 2023, over 1.2 million children were enrolled in schools nationwide, with a significant increase in girls’ participation. “I am therefore not surprised that 56 percent of today’s graduates are women,” he said, attributing this to sustained investment in human capital development.

The Vice President also mentioned the Government efforts in technical and vocational education, digital learning, teacher recruitment, and the establishment of new universities, including ETU. Over 12,000 teachers have been recruited in the past four to five years, while 22 percent of the national budget is allocated to education.

Dr. Juldeh Jalloh urged graduates to embrace leadership defined by character, responsibility, and service, stressing that education must empower individuals before it can produce leaders.

The announcement of the digital laboratory notably reflects the Government’s continued investment in modernizing learning infrastructure and enhancing student access to technology.
