The Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Julius Maada Bio, has reaffirmed the importance of a unified and sincere international approach to addressing security and development challenges in the Sahel.

Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, President Bio emphasized that reengagement in the Sahel must go beyond geopolitical interests and focus on long-term stability and prosperity for the region.

He noted that ECOWAS remains fully committed to working closely with Europe and other international partners to deliver practical and sustainable solutions to the complex security challenges affecting West Africa and the wider Sahel region.

According to President Bio, addressing insecurity in the Sahel requires a comprehensive strategy combining military cooperation with economic development initiatives. He stressed that empowering young people through job creation, education, and economic opportunities is essential to tackling the root causes of instability.

The ECOWAS Chairman also highlighted the importance of coordinated international support, noting that regional organizations and global partners must work together in a transparent and mutually respectful manner to achieve lasting peace.

The Sahel region has faced increasing security threats in recent years, including armed insurgencies, political instability, and humanitarian challenges. ECOWAS continues to engage regional and international stakeholders to restore constitutional order, strengthen governance, and promote sustainable development.

The Munich Security Conference brings together global leaders, policymakers, and security experts to discuss international peace and security, emerging threats, and cooperative solutions. President Bio’s participation underscores ECOWAS’ ongoing efforts to advocate for stronger international partnerships in addressing the Sahel crisis.
