The Kenema Old Students’ Association (KOSA) has announced it is consulting legal experts after the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) canceled the 2025 examination results of Unpha Lamin Koroma, a student briefly recognized as the top performer in Sierra Leone.
In a press release issued by Assistant National Secretary General Braima Musa, the association detailed a turbulent series of events regarding Koroma’s West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) scores.
According to KOSA, WAEC initially withheld the results without explanation, released them following weeks of deliberation, and then abruptly canceled them, citing “administrative errors and oversight.”

The cancellation has sparked significant controversy. In December 2025, the administration of Kenema Government Secondary School publicly lobbied the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary School Education (MBSSE) to recognize Koroma as the nation’s top candidate.
Reports indicated Koroma earned six As and three Bs, a performance that surpassed the 1.78 GPA of Roseline Mariam Jalloh, who had been previously announced as the country’s top student.
While the school maintains that Koroma’s academic record is exemplary and his results authentic, the subsequent cancellation by WAEC has left the student’s status in limbo. KOSA officials stated that despite numerous meetings, the examination body has yet to provide a formal justification for the permanent withdrawal of the scores.

In response to the setback, Koroma has been re-registered to sit for the 2026 WASSCE. To ensure his academic continuity, he is currently residing with KOSA National President Ibrahim Deen, who has pledged to sponsor the student’s education and general wellbeing.
The KOSA Executive confirmed it is working with a legal team to review the situation and determine if a court challenge is necessary to secure the “full and unconditional release” of the 2025 results.

“The outcome of this legal review will be communicated to members in due course,” the statement read, adding that the association remains committed to seeking transparency from WAEC.

This is not the first time they are doing this. It’s like has been deliberately planned…
