The Kono University of Science and Technology (KUST) is now fully operational, with student enrolment ongoing and key administrative positions filled, the Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Haja Ramatulai Wurie, has announced.
Speaking at a civic engagement at the Kono District Council Hall, Dr Wurie said the development of KUST is part of the government’s broader agenda to strengthen higher education under President Julius Maada Bio. Academic programmes are progressing steadily, she added, reflecting a commitment to expanding access to quality tertiary education.
Dr Wurie commended the university’s leadership for forging international partnerships to enhance academic capacity. She revealed that a Memorandum of Understanding has been signed with the China University of Science and Technology to support training in science and mining-related disciplines, with some lecturers already undergoing advanced training in China. Similar collaborations are underway with institutions in South Africa and other countries.
On infrastructure, the Minister announced a US$32 million investment for KUST’s permanent campus, describing it as a major economic catalyst for Kono District that will create jobs, stimulate local business activity, and attract further development.
Earlier, the Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor A. Bah, said the engagement is part of government’s civic outreach initiative to deepen public understanding of national programmes and promote inclusive participation in development efforts.
Dr Wurie concluded that sustained commitment, good governance, and strong international partnerships will ensure KUST contributes meaningfully to innovation, skills development, and economic transformation in Sierra Leone.
