The Executive Secretary of the Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion (ICPNC), Hawa Samai, has said that the lack of effective communication between the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) remains a major challenge to implementing the recommendations of the Tripartite Committee established after the country’s 2023 elections.

Samai said the strained relationship between the two political parties continues to slow progress in carrying out the reforms proposed by the committee, which was set up to address electoral concerns and strengthen democratic governance in Sierra Leone.

Speaking on the issue, the ICPNC Executive Secretary emphasized that dialogue, cooperation, and mutual trust between the SLPP and the APC are essential for the successful implementation of the committee’s recommendations.

According to Samai, the work of the Tripartite Committee was intended to promote national cohesion and restore confidence in democratic institutions following the political tensions that emerged after the 2023 elections. However, she noted that progress has been slow because of limited engagement and communication between the government and the opposition.

She stressed that sustained dialogue between the two parties is critical if the recommendations are to be fully adopted and effectively implemented for the benefit of the country.

The recommendations of the Tripartite Committee were designed to address concerns around the electoral process and strengthen democratic governance,” Samai said, adding that the process requires active participation and communication from both sides of the political divide.

Samai further called on the SLPP and the APC to place national interest above political differences and engage in constructive discussions that will help move the reform process forward.

She reiterated that strengthening communication channels between the two parties would play a key role in promoting peace, political stability, and democratic progress in Sierra Leone.

The Tripartite Committee was established following the political tensions that emerged after the 2023 elections, with the aim of addressing electoral disputes and recommending reforms to strengthen the country’s democratic institutions. Implementation of its recommendations is widely seen as an important step toward improving political trust and stability in Sierra Leone.
