Sierra Leone’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Henry Musa Kpaka, inspected 40 newly procured tractors at the Ministry’s Engineering Facility in Kissy on Thursday, March 19, marking a push toward mechanized farming ahead of the 2026 planting season.
The tractors are slated for distribution across multiple districts to boost local agricultural output. To ensure the equipment remains operational, the Ministry is utilizing an ongoing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Sierra Leone Armed Forces to handle nationwide repair and maintenance.
Dr. Kpaka, accompanied during the inspection by Chief of Defence Staff Lieutenant General Amara Adara Bangura and a military engineering team, noted that the collaboration is designed to strengthen maintenance systems and significantly extend the lifespan of machinery deployed to rural farming communities.
The military’s involvement in the agricultural sector extends beyond equipment maintenance. Lt. Gen. Bangura reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ commitment to national food security, announcing plans for the military to cultivate up to 10,000 hectares of rice this year.
Additionally, Bangura stated that military engineers are currently retrieving broken-down and idle agricultural equipment from districts across the country. The initiative aims to repair and reintegrate these older machines into the national fleet to further optimize farming capabilities.
Agricultural tractors working at kissy, Freetown. I don’t know the type of crops they will be growing in Freetown and the land they will be cultivating the crops on? We have been seeing tractors shipped into this country, particularly in Freetown, where there’s no Agricultural land to cultivate. Mobile phones agriculture in Sierra Leone is very excellent. Upcountry has a lot of inland valley swamps, flatlands for irrigation and mechanization, but the tractors required to do the work are always kept in Freetown, who knows the mission behind it. I don’t know why Sierra Leone always produce disgraceful leaders? The assumingly respected leaders are always becoming disgraceful in society. Incompetent cronyisms and cohorts are always brought inside government to protecting personal interest. Employment is not by education or qualifications but by recommendations. Recommended employee works in the interest of his boss, instead of the country. The two political parties have basically divided the country into two, and the division is to protect the interest of their political parties while the country becomes the battlefield.
