The Sierra Leone Water Company (SALWACO), alongside the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, sister agencies, and development partners, commemorated World Water Day 2026 under the theme “Water & Gender” and the slogan “Where Water Flows, Equality Grows.”
The event, held at the Miatta Conference Centre in Freetown, brought together key stakeholders including the Guma Valley Water Company, the Sierra Leone Water Regulatory Commission (SLEWRC), the National Water Resources Management Agency (NWRMA), civil society organisations, and development partners.
The gathering served as a platform to reflect on progress made and challenges facing Sierra Leone’s water sector.

Delivering the keynote address, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Dr Hannah Isata Sao-Kpato Macarthy, underscored the strong link between gender equality and access to water. She called for greater inclusion of women and girls in water governance, stressing the need to place them at the centre of solutions, leadership, and decision-making processes.
In her remarks, SALWACO’s Managing Director, Ing. Tiideni Hawa Jabbi, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to promoting gender-inclusive water management. She noted that achieving sustainable and equitable access to water depends largely on the meaningful participation of women in decision-making structures.

The commemoration highlighted the growing recognition of gender as a key factor in ensuring effective and inclusive water service delivery across Sierra Leone.
