The Women in Tourism Leadership Africa Committee (WiTLAC), in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs and its partner agencies, concluded a two-day intensive training program.
The workshop, titled “Empowering Sierra Leonean Journalists for Sustainable Tourism Reporting,” brought together 26 female journalists, bloggers, and media professionals. The initiative aimed to equip these media practitioners with the specialized skills required to produce in-depth, compelling, and sustainable tourism stories that resonate with both local and international audiences.
Furthermore, the core objective of the training was to move beyond surface-level reporting. Participants were encouraged to explore diverse angles of the tourism sector, blending professional journalistic standards with a uniquely Sierra Leonean narrative style and “taste.”

During the Engagement, one of the facilitators, Howard, helped participants tap into the authentic Sierra Leonean voice. Her sessions focused on bringing out the best of local storytelling, ensuring that the country’s heritage and beauty are communicated with pride and precision.
Additionally, Dr. Kingsley Uranta, the Managing Director of Channels TV, Nigeria, brought a wealth of international media savvy to the table. Dr. Uranta focused on global reporting standards, guiding the women through rigorous practical exercises and group work designed to sharpen their technical edge.
Finally, the session allowed the journalists to apply storytelling techniques in a real-world environment, highlighting the craftsmanship and cultural vibrancy of Sierra Leone’s tourism assets.
The closing ceremony certificates were presented to participant and the workshop underscored the cross-sectoral support for tourism as a pillar of national development and the vital role women play in that journey.
