A 36-year-old female passenger whose journey originated in Sierra Leone has been arrested at the Hong Kong International Airport after customs officials discovered approximately 3 kilograms of suspected cocaine concealed in her luggage.

The arrest occurred on April 13 during a routine customs clearance operation. According to the Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department, the suspect traveled from Freetown, Sierra Leone, and transited through Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, before arriving in Hong Kong.

Authorities estimate the seized narcotics have a street value of approximately HK$2.7 million (roughly USD $345,000).

Following the discovery, the woman was immediately taken into custody and has been formally charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug. She was scheduled to appear before the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts for a hearing on April 15.

In the wake of the arrest, the Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department reiterated its commitment to cracking down on transnational drug syndicates through intelligence-led operations.

Authorities issued a strong public warning, urging travelers not to participate in drug trafficking for financial gain or accept commissions to transport unknown items across international borders.

Hong Kong maintains some of the strictest anti-narcotics laws in the world. Under the territory’s Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, drug trafficking is classified as a severe criminal offense.

If convicted, the suspect faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment and a fine of HK$5 million.

Hong Kong Customs continues to encourage the public to report suspected drug trafficking activities through its 24-hour hotline and dedicated online reporting channels.
