A devastating windstorm has wreaked havoc in Gandorhun Town, Gbane Chiefdom, in Kono District, destroying more than 50 houses, market places, the community power generator electrification system, and properties worth thousands of Leones.

According to Councillor Tamba Thompson Safea, Chairman of Constituency 024, the destruction has left between 700 and 1,000 residents homeless, with many families now stranded and seeking shelter.

The violent storm also caused injuries, forcing several affected residents to seek urgent medical treatment at the Gandorhun Hospital.

In response to the disaster, Councillor Safea has directed party executive members, alongside the sitting councillor and local authorities, to conduct a needs assessment in Gandorhun to determine the full extent of the damage and estimate recovery costs.

The findings are expected to be presented to relevant government ministries, departments and agencies, as well as international Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), local NGOs, philanthropists, and development partners to mobilise emergency support for affected residents.

“Our people are suffering as I write this notification. Urgent intervention is needed to support displaced families and restore basic services,” Councillor Safea stated.

Residents are now calling for immediate humanitarian assistance, including temporary shelter, food supplies, medical support, and the restoration of electricity in the affected community.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is yet to issue a statement on the disaster. Experts fear that such disasters will become common due to the effect of climate change.
