Rehabilitation and regraveling works on the 87-kilometre Kenema–Zimmi Road have officially commenced, according to the Government of Sierra Leone.
The project is being implemented by the Sierra Leone Roads Authority in collaboration with the Ministry of Works and Public Assets and the Road Maintenance Fund Administration.
For years, officials and residents said the highway had remained in poor condition, causing transportation difficulties, delays in the movement of goods and services, and hardship for communities along the corridor.
The road serves as a key link between farming communities, business centres, and cross-border routes to neighbouring Liberia. Authorities said the rehabilitation is expected to reduce travel time, improve road safety, boost trade, and strengthen agricultural supply networks upon completion.
The project is also expected to create temporary employment opportunities for local residents during construction while supporting long-term economic growth in the south-eastern region.
Residents and stakeholders described the commencement of the works as a response to longstanding public concerns over the deteriorating condition of the highway. They said improved infrastructure could expand market access and enhance regional connectivity.
The Kenema–Zimmi Road rehabilitation project forms part of the Government’s broader efforts to expand infrastructure development across Sierra Leone.
