The Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has officially launched the Elections Project Committee to strengthen peaceful and credible elections in the country.
The inaugural meeting, co-chaired by Chief Electoral Commissioner Edmond Sylvester Alpha and UNDP Resident Representative Frederick Hans Ampiah, was held under the theme: “Strengthening Capacities for Peaceful and Credible Elections in Sierra Leone.”
The initiative brings together key national institutions, development partners, and governance experts in a coordinated effort to safeguard Sierra Leone’s democratic processes.

Participating national institutions include the ECSL, the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC), the Office of National Security (ONS), the Office of the Attorney General, and the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ). Development partners such as the European Union, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Iceland, and Canada are also part of the committee, alongside UNDP as a technical partner.
Speaking at the meeting, the co-chairs emphasised the importance of collaboration in building public trust and ensuring that electoral processes are transparent, inclusive, and peaceful.

The Elections Project Committee is expected to focus on enhancing institutional capacity, promoting stakeholder coordination, and supporting reforms that strengthen electoral integrity across the country.
Officials noted that the initiative reflects a shared national commitment to uphold democratic values and deliver elections that accurately represent the will of the people.

The formation of the committee marks a significant step toward fostering unity among institutions and reinforcing Sierra Leone’s democratic framework.
Observers say credible elections remain central to national stability and development, with the new initiative seen as a timely intervention in advancing electoral excellence in the country.
