A productive meeting was held between officials of the Presidential Initiative on Climate Resilience, Environment and Food Security (PI-CREF) and Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr and her team to review progress on the Freetown Tree Town initiative.

The engagement focused on assessing achievements of the project, including the creation of green jobs and increased community participation in environmental restoration and protection efforts across Freetown.

Discussions also centred on the next phase of the initiative, which aims to position Freetown as Sierra Leone’s first municipal carbon credit programme.

PI-CREF reaffirmed its commitment to working with relevant institutions to address existing challenges and support the project’s accreditation process ahead of a September 2026 deadline.

The initiative continues to focus on promoting climate resilience, environmental sustainability, and green economic opportunities in Freetown through urban forestry and environmental management programmes.
