Civil society organisations in Moyamba District are demanding a thorough and impartial investigation into the death of John Patrick Togbie, a teacher and member of the Sierra Leone Police Force who died on 24th May 2026 at the Moyamba Police Barrack.
The Moyamba Civil Society, in a press statement, expressed deep sadness and alarm over the circumstances surrounding his death. Initial rumours suggested Togbie had died by suicide, but an official autopsy report from the Chief Medical Examiner of the Ministry of Internal Affairs revealed a different cause.
According to the autopsy findings, Togbie died from multiple blunt force injuries, fractures to the head, neck, chest, and spine, as well as manual strangulation with finger trail excoriation and neurogenic shock. The report described the injuries as resulting from a “severe, brutal, horrifying, frenzied and fatal physical assault.”
The civil society groups are calling on the Sierra Leone Police to conduct a transparent investigation and hold those responsible accountable. They have also urged authorities to ensure the safety of potential witnesses and provide psychosocial support to the children of the deceased.
“We are ready and willing to cooperate with law enforcement agencies during the investigation,” the statement read. “The community has a right to know the truth behind his death.”
The Moyamba Civil Society further stated that it would follow the matter until justice is served.
