Renowned Sierra Leonean journalist and political commentator Edward W. J. Caulker has called on President Julius Maada Bio to draw lessons from previous leadership succession processes within the Sierra Leone People’s Party and the All People’s Congress as the country approaches the 2028 general elections.

Speaking on a recent media interview, Caulker referenced key moments in the country’s political history, including the SLPP’s 2007 delegates’ conference and the APC’s 2018 internal leadership contest. He said such experiences should guide current political actors in managing party succession.

“I hope President Bio has learned from the SLPP’s 2007 delegates’ conference and the APC’s 2018 delegates’ conference. This will be a true test of the SLPP’s democratic maturity,” Caulker said.

He argued that the way President Bio handles internal party transitions could shape the future of the SLPP, similar to how decisions made by former President Ernest Bai Koroma influenced the APC during his time in office.

Caulker also noted that political parties often face internal challenges after extended periods in government, as cohesion and focus can weaken over time. He stressed the importance of maintaining party discipline and effective internal management, particularly during leadership selection and succession periods.

His remarks come amid growing public discussion on political succession and party unity ahead of the 2028 elections, with attention shifting to how the ruling SLPP will navigate its internal democratic processes.
