The Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs (MoGCA) has convened the inaugural meeting of a Technical Legislative Committee tasked with reviewing the Domestic Violence Act 2007 and the Matrimonial Causes Act.

Welcoming participants, the Permanent Secretary, on behalf of the ministry’s leadership, expressed appreciation to partners and committee members for their commitment to advancing legal reforms aimed at promoting justice, equality, and the protection of human rights.

She noted that the meeting marked the formal constitution of the committee and the beginning of work to review the two key laws, describing them as central to the protection of human rights and the promotion of justice.

She encouraged members to contribute their expertise and work collaboratively to strengthen the country’s legislative framework.

Following the opening remarks, Deputy Director of Gender Affairs Joseph Bamie Sesay presented the Terms of Reference, outlining the committee’s mandate, scope of work, objectives, and expected outcomes.

Representatives from partner institutions reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the review process and pledged continued collaboration to ensure effective implementation of the committee’s mandate. They emphasised the importance of strengthening legal frameworks to address emerging challenges and improve the protection and welfare of citizens, particularly women and vulnerable groups.
