The Council of Churches in Sierra Leone (CCSL) has issued a call for academic papers for a forthcoming publication examining the role of the Church in national politics, with a focus on strengthening Christian engagement in governance, public policy, and national development.

The publication, which falls within the field of Public Theology, seeks to explore how Christian faith should inform responses to public issues and guide the Church’s participation in contemporary political discourse. It also aims to provide a theological framework for understanding the Church’s role in promoting justice, peace, accountability, and good governance.

According to the Council, the initiative is intended to critically examine the historical relationship between the Church and politics in Sierra Leone while identifying practical ways for Christian institutions to contribute to the country’s democratic development and social well-being.

The CCSL noted that the Church has historically played an influential role in shaping Sierra Leone’s political landscape through advocacy for justice, peace, and ethical leadership. It emphasised that the Church should continue to provide moral guidance and actively contribute to national conversations on governance and development.

The Council is inviting scholars, theologians, clergy, researchers, and other interested contributors to submit original and unpublished papers addressing the central theme, “The Role of the Church in National Politics.” Contributors are encouraged to examine a broad range of topics, including biblical and theological foundations for political engagement, Christian ethics, public theology, good governance, anti-corruption efforts, electoral participation, church-state relations, national reconciliation, interfaith cooperation, and international diplomacy.

Submissions must be original, unpublished, and between 3,000 and 5,000 words, including references. Manuscripts should follow the Harvard referencing style and be accompanied by an abstract of between 300 and 350 words. All submissions are required in Microsoft Word format.

The Council has set August 30, 2026, as the deadline for expressions of interest, while abstracts must be submitted by November 1, 2026. Full papers are due on January 15, 2027.

The publication is expected to serve as a significant academic resource on the intersection of Christianity, governance, and public life, while contributing to ongoing discussions on the Church’s role in fostering ethical leadership, national unity, and sustainable development in Sierra Leone.
