Sierra Leone’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Russian Federation, His Excellency Mohamed Yongawo, on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, hosted the Nigerian Ambassador to the Russian Federation, His Excellency Iji Joseph Olusola, during a courtesy visit at the Sierra Leone Embassy in Moscow.
The meeting, held at the embassy on Korovy Val, focused on strengthening diplomatic relations between Sierra Leone and Nigeria and promoting closer cooperation among African missions in Russia.
Ambassador Yongawo welcomed his Nigerian counterpart and described the discussions as a reflection of the strong historical and fraternal ties that have long existed between the two West African nations. He recalled the role of Fourah Bay College as the “Athens of West Africa” and highlighted Nigeria’s significant contribution to peacekeeping efforts during Sierra Leone’s civil war.
He said Sierra Leone remains grateful for Nigeria’s support during the conflict, adding that the contribution of Nigerian forces continues to be recognised by Sierra Leoneans.
The Sierra Leonean envoy also emphasised Nigeria’s strategic role in Africa, describing it as a major driver of regional integration and cooperation in West Africa.
As Deputy Dean of the African Heads of Mission in Russia, Ambassador Yongawo offered guidance to Ambassador Olusola as he begins his diplomatic assignment in Moscow and encouraged closer collaboration among African ambassadors on issues affecting their citizens and shared continental interests.
Ambassador Olusola thanked Ambassador Yongawo for the warm reception and commended his leadership. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening African unity, enhancing diplomatic cooperation, promoting trade and investment, and working with Russian authorities on matters concerning citizens of both countries.
The two ambassadors also exchanged views on the recent ECOWAS Summit hosted in Freetown under the chairmanship of President Julius Maada Bio. They commended Sierra Leone for successfully hosting the regional meeting and reaffirmed their commitment to peace, security, and economic cooperation in West Africa.
The meeting ended with both diplomats expressing confidence that relations between Sierra Leone and Nigeria would continue to deepen through sustained diplomatic engagement and cooperation.
