A 4-0 thrashing at the West Africa Champions Cup has revived familiar questions about Star Sport Academy’s tactical adaptability, just weeks before the club’s maiden CAF Champions League campaign.
Souleymane Diawara scored twice as Karfamoriah FC dismantled the Sierra Leonean side on Friday at Stade M’Balou Mady Glao Diakité, with Amadou Mansaré and Mohamed Lamine Condé adding further goals. The defeat came despite the recent appointment of Slovak coach Jozef Vukušič as Technical Adviser, a move announced just days earlier to strengthen the club’s technical setup.
Vukušič, a UEFA Pro Licence holder who previously managed South African Premiership side AmaZulu, was brought in to support first-team coaching and academy development. Club CEO Ing. Yankuba J. Tarawally positioned the appointment as part of a broader effort to raise standards ahead of continental competition.
But Friday’s performance offered little evidence of tactical evolution. Karfamoriah — which finished 11th in Guinea’s Ligue 1 last season — dominated from the 16th minute onward, while Star Sport Academy struggled to mount a response. The result follows a pattern from last season, when the club’s title challenge faltered amid criticism of predictable formations and inflexible in-game decision-making.
The defeat does not affect Star Sport Academy’s CAF Champions League preliminary round tie against Gambia’s Medina United, scheduled for Sept. 5 in Bo City, with the return leg set for Sept. 12 . But it raises urgent questions about whether the club’s technical revamp can produce change before continental competition begins.
Karim’s squad will have another opportunity to respond in its remaining West Africa Champions Cup matches as it works to build momentum ahead of the CAF qualifiers.
