Post a comment The Commissioner General of the National Revenue Authority (NRA), Abu Martin Kanneh, has held his maiden stakeholder engagement with Managing Directors and representatives of Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) operating in Sierra Leone, as he begins efforts to strengthen revenue administration in the petroleum sector.
The meeting provided an opportunity for Commissioner General Kanneh to formally engage key stakeholders, outline the priorities of his administration and hear concerns and operational challenges affecting oil marketing companies.
Discussions focused on petroleum volume and payment reconciliation, including the management of concessions, with emphasis on strengthening compliance, improving coordination and ensuring effective revenue mobilisation from the petroleum sector.
Welcoming the OMC representatives, Kanneh recognised the sector’s importance to Sierra Leone’s economy and disclosed that petroleum contributes more than 50 percent of the revenue collected by the NRA.
The Commissioner General, however, said revenue performance from the sector remains below expectations despite reforms introduced under the Finance Act 2026. He therefore called for stronger collaboration, accurate reporting, effective reconciliation systems and improved compliance to ensure that the Government receives the revenue due to it.
In response, representatives of the OMCs congratulated Kanneh on his appointment and expressed their commitment to working with the NRA to improve revenue administration. They identified effective petroleum volume-tracking and reconciliation systems as critical to enhancing transparency, accountability and revenue collection within the sector.
The OMC representatives also presented concerns and recommendations on operational challenges affecting their businesses and commended Kanneh and his team for prioritising stakeholder consultation at the start of his tenure.
They described the engagement as a positive step towards understanding industry concerns and addressing challenges collaboratively before the implementation of further enforcement measures.
