EU Highlights Trade Opportunities for Sierra Leone Under 25-Year-Old EBA Scheme

The European Union (EU) has highlighted the trade opportunities available to Sierra Leone through its Everything But Arms (EBA) initiative, as it marks 25 years of providing duty-free and quota-free access to the European market for eligible developing countries.

The EU Delegation in Sierra Leone brought together members of the business community and government officials at a high-level event to commemorate the anniversary and discuss the launch of the renewed Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP).

The discussions focused on how Sierra Leone can maximise the benefits of duty-free and quota-free access to the EU market, strengthen bilateral trade and attract investment to support economic growth.

Speaking at the event, EU Ambassador Jacek Jankowski recalled the role EBA has played over the past 25 years in opening the European market to goods from developing countries, allowing them to export products without import duties or quotas, except arms and ammunition.

He described the scheme as an important trade platform for countries such as Sierra Leone, which has significant natural resources, a strategic Atlantic location and a young, entrepreneurial population.

For Sierra Leone, the initiative provides opportunities to expand exports, promote local production and add value to agricultural commodities while creating jobs and strengthening economic resilience.

Under the EBA arrangement, Sierra Leone has increasingly exported products such as cocoa, coffee, palm oil and cashew nuts to European markets.

The event also provided participants and members of the public with an opportunity to join the 25th anniversary celebration virtually from Brussels, where stakeholders reflected on the achievements of the initiative and discussed its future direction.

The renewed Generalised Scheme of Preferences is expected to provide a further platform for discussions on strengthening trade relations and expanding economic opportunities between the EU and beneficiary countries.

Through the EBA initiative, the EU continues to offer Sierra Leone an opportunity to increase its participation in international trade, particularly by improving the competitiveness and export potential of locally produced goods.
