Hon. Sidie Mohamed Tunis, Speaker of the fifth legislature of the Ecowas parliament, played a pivotal role on February 12-13, 2024, in Senegal, where he successfully chaired a meeting aimed at addressing the postponement of the electoral calendar. This delay had posed significant challenges for the people of Senegal and raised concerns for Ecowas leadership.
Speaker Tunis underscored the imperative of dialogue between the government and opposition parties, reaffirming Ecowas’s impartiality in Senegal’s political process.
The escalating situation prompted Ecowas to convene a national dialogue in Senegal, bringing together members of both the opposition and the government to discuss critical issues and advocate for the preservation of democracy in the country.
Despite the political crisis, the Ecowas Commission and Community Parliament acknowledged Senegal’s history of political stability, with smooth transitions of power and minimal coup attempts. Consequently, the Ecowas Parliament is committed to maintaining this stability and ensuring Senegal’s continued democratic progress.
