On October 7, 2023, Maria G. Harrison, the Secretary General of the Mano River Union (MRU), formally inaugurated the MRU Election Observation Mission in Monrovia, Liberia. This launch precedes the imminent elections slated for October 10, 2023.

In the presence of an international observer delegation, Harrison convened a press conference to signify the initiation of this mission. In her address, she underscored the critical significance of conducting elections that are characterized by openness, fairness, and transparency, emphasizing their role in fostering stability and advancement within MRU member nations.

The MRU Election Observation Mission has been tasked with vigilant oversight of Liberia’s electoral procedures from October 7th to October 12th, 2023. Its overarching objective is to ensure that these elections align with international norms and uphold democratic values.

Maria G. Harrison conveyed her appreciation to the governments of Liberia and the MRU member countries for their cooperative efforts and backing in facilitating this pivotal mission. Furthermore, she extended her call to all stakeholders, encompassing political parties, civil society organizations, and voters, to engage in the electoral process with a commitment to peaceful and responsible participation.

The MRU Election Observation Mission is poised to furnish impartial evaluations and suggestions aimed at augmenting the credibility and transparency of Liberia’s electoral process. In doing so, it seeks to make a substantial contribution to the overarching democratic advancement of the Mano River Union.
