A 60-year-old Uber driver, identified as Tahirou Diallo of Hurst, was fatally shot early Wednesday morning in North Richland Hills, allegedly by a passenger he was transporting.

The North Richland Hills Police Department (NRHPD) has confirmed an ongoing investigation in the incident, which occurred in the 8000 block of Mickey Street.

Police responded to reports of the gunfire at approximately 12:01 a.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered Diallo deceased near an SUV parked in the roadway. According to the NRHPD, another man, identified as Kane Roden, was found at the scene and appeared to be “highly intoxicated.”

“Police say they found a gun next to the suspect, Kane Roden, when they arrived,”

The preliminary investigation indicates that Diallo was working as a rideshare driver, and Roden was his passenger. The NRHPD believes the two men did not know each other prior to the encounter and are treating the incident as isolated, with no other suspects being sought at this time.

A witness, Lauren Shoffit, told a local news outlet she observed the shooting. “I saw a man come from around the passenger’s side, then the back of the car and I saw him shoot. Two hands. Looked almost like the stance. I saw him shoot. Heard. Saw the flash and I ran away,” Shoffit said.

Roden is currently in custody, facing a murder charge along with two outstanding charges from another law enforcement agency. According to online records, Roden’s prior criminal history includes charges of family violence and violating a bond/protection order, as well as aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and terroristic threat of a family household.

Uber released a statement expressing condolences and offering support to the investigation. “We’re deeply saddened by this devastating loss. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the driver’s family during this incredibly difficult time. We are in contact with law enforcement and are supporting their investigation in any way we can,” Uber officials said.

The NRHPD has assured a continued effort to investigate the circumstances leading up to the shooting, and urged that should anyone has an information regarding the incident, to please contact the North Richland Hills Police Department at (817) 281-1000.
