Concerns are mounting for the safety of Marget Turay, a Sierra Leonean national reportedly detained by police in the Republic of Oman.
Her brother, James Turay, has issued an urgent appeal to the Sierra Leonean government for assistance.
According to James Turay, communication with his sister abruptly ceased on January 6th. “My sister has been living in the Republic of Oman for the past years, but lately, I haven’t gotten in touch with her, since January 6th communication stopped,” he stated in an interview.
The family’s distress deepened when their mother, residing in Makeni, received intermittent messages indicating Marget Turay’s detention. “They will often give them their phone once in a while,” James Turay explained, suggesting limited and controlled contact.
Adding to their anxiety, the Omani police have reportedly provided no information regarding the reasons for Marget Turay’s detention, nor offered any guidance on potential release procedures. James Turay also highlighted that his sister’s passport is due to expire in 2025, and she had intended to return to Sierra Leone this year.
“We are kindly pleading to the government to please help us, not only her but also other Sierra Leoneans who are also detained,” James Turay implored. The family expresses deep concern for Marget’s well-being and is urgently requesting the intervention of the Sierra Leonean government and the Minister of Foreign Affairs. They are also seeking support from humanitarian organizations.
