Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, has issued a formal directive aimed at streamlining class schedules and reducing the commuting burden on students.
The notice, signed and stamped by the Deputy Registrar’s Office, outlines new guidelines for Saturday classes and general timetabling across faculties and departments.
According to the directive, Saturday classes are strictly prohibited unless explicitly approved by the Dean and coordinated with the Students’ Section. Where approval is granted, students must be informed at least seventy-two (72) hours in advance to allow adequate preparation and attendance.
In a broader move to improve academic efficiency and student well-being, departments are encouraged to structure timetables so that students attend classes on no more than three days per week. Exceptions are permitted only for students taking elective modules outside their primary department or faculty.
“These measures are intended to reduce the burden of commuting to and from campus, particularly for students traveling long distances to attend limited classes,” the notice states. “They also aim to provide students with adequate time for independent, self-directed learning.”
The College further announced that spot checks will be conducted periodically by both College and University authorities to ensure compliance with the new scheduling policy and approved teaching timetables.
Faculty members and administrative heads are urged to adhere strictly to the directive, which reflects the institution’s commitment to student-centered academic planning and operational transparency.
