The Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Conrad Sackey, has visited the Nyapui Senior Secondary School of Excellence for Girls in Kenema District to assess the extent of damage caused by a recent fire outbreak.
During the visit, the Minister said he was deeply devastated by what he witnessed and expressed solidarity with the pupils, teachers, and school administration during what he described as a difficult period for the institution.
Minister Sackey noted that the latest incident is not the first fire to affect the school this year. He explained that Nyapui has experienced multiple fire outbreaks since the beginning of the year, impacting dormitories and, most recently, an administrative block that housed the Principal’s Office, a computer laboratory, and classrooms. The affected classrooms had been accommodating students displaced by an earlier fire.
He stressed that the repeated incidents have significantly disrupted the learning environment and adversely affected the students.
Describing Nyapui as one of Sierra Leone’s most respected institutions, the Minister highlighted its role in providing quality education, particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), to girls from across the country and beyond.
He stressed that such recurring disasters must not be allowed to undermine the pupils’ future.
Minister Sackey assured that the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education will work closely with the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), development partners, and the school community to investigate the cause of the fires, rebuild damaged structures, and strengthen fire safety measures in boarding schools nationwide.
He also reassured the pupils and staff that they are not alone, reaffirming the government’s commitment to restoring the school and ensuring a safe learning environment.
