The University of Makeni (Unimak) has expelled three students and suspended seven others for their involvement in a fraudulent scheme related to examination passes.

The decision follows a thorough investigation by the university’s Disciplinary Committee.

According to a statement from the Office of the Dean of Students’ Affairs, the expelled students were directly involved in issuing fraudulent examination passes, while the suspended students were found to have aided and abetted the misconduct. The university said that those suspended will serve a one-year academic ban.

Unimak said in a statement that this action reflects its unwavering commitment to academic integrity and ethical conduct. “We will not tolerate any form of fraudulent behavior within our institution and will continue to take stringent measures to uphold the values that Unimak represents,” the statement read.

The university has vowed to remain vigilant against academic dishonesty and warned that future offenders will face severe consequences. It further urged students to uphold integrity as the university continues to strive for academic excellence and moral responsibility.

Unimak is the only private university in Sierra Leone’s largest northern city of Makeni. It is regarded as one of the most conducive tertiary institutions in the country. The news has left many with good remarks about the university supporting their stance against fraud.
