The University of Management and Technology (UNIMTECH) has gained a formal seat on Sierra Leone’s National Council for Technical and Vocational Education (NCTVE), a move set to strengthen the role of private academic institutions in shaping national skills policy.

The appointment is mandated under the newly enacted National Council for Technical and Vocational Education Act of 2025. The NCTVE serves as the statutory body responsible for the regulation and strategic development of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector across the country.

Officials view the inclusion of UNIMTECH as a strategic effort to bridge the gap between higher education and vocational training. By integrating established academic institutions into the council, the government aims to better align educational output with labor market demands.

Through this new role, UNIMTECH will contribute to policy dialogue, quality assurance mechanisms, and the strategic oversight of TVET institutions nationwide.

Professor Patrick Unisa Taylor, UNIMTECH’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs, confirmed the appointment and emphasized the university’s readiness to support the sector.

“We remain dedicated to advancing TVET as a key driver of youth employment, inclusive economic growth, and sustainable national development,” Prof. Taylor stated.

He added that the university is committed to promoting a “responsive, high-quality, and future-ready technical and vocational education system,” which is central to the national strategy for economic diversification and tackling unemployment.
