The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially approved an extension for the submission of entries for the 2025 National Primary School Examination (NPSE) and Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), moving the deadline to February 28, 2026.
In a letter dated December 12, 2025, and addressed to the Chief Education Officer at the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE), WAEC confirmed it had granted the Ministry’s request to adjust the timeline.
The initial deadline, which was set for January 12, 2026, has now been pushed back by over six weeks.
“I wish to… inform you that your request for an extension from the 12th January to the 28 February, 2026 has been granted,” stated M. D. Bangura, acting on behalf of the Head of the National Office.
However, the Council issued a strict caution regarding the new date. The letter emphasized that “there will be no further extension after the stipulated deadline,” urging all stakeholders to adhere to the new schedule.
Background on the Extension This development follows a formal appeal made earlier this month by the Sierra Leone Teachers Union (SLTU). On December 2, SLTU Secretary General Morris S. Conteh wrote to the Ministry, arguing that the original window for uploading entries was too narrow.
The Union contended that extending the period to the end of February would allow schools to complete the registration process “with minimum difficulties” and ease the pressure on administrators.
With this approval from WAEC, school authorities now have an extended window to finalize candidate entries before the portal closes permanently on February 28.
