Sierra Leonean professional footballer Mohamed Buya Turay has opened up about the challenges he faced during the 2023-2024 period, which included personal struggles and a divorce.

Turay, who plays for Birmingham Legion FC and the Sierra Leone national team (Leone Stars), described the year as one of “darkness, trauma, frustration, and struggles” in a recent social media post.

He cited several difficulties, including investment problems with trusted individuals and injury issues at the start of the season with his former club. Turay also alluded to “serious obstacles” he faced as a father.

The announcement comes after Turay’s separation from his wife, Suad, in February 2024. The couple’s marriage had been under strain for months due to trust issues and public speculation surrounding the paternity of their child. A DNA test confirmed Turay as the biological father, but the relationship could not be salvaged.

Despite the hardships, Turay expressed gratitude to those who supported him through the difficult times. “As this year comes to an end, I want to express my gratitude to all who have been part of my life for helping me through these tough times,” he wrote. “I know people understand that there’s so much more behind the scenes that they don’t see.”

Looking ahead, Turay expressed hope for the future. “Here’s to moving forward and finding strength in the future. Happy New Year,” he concluded.
