Prominent rapper and leader of the Black Leo Movement, Kao Denero, has publicly addressed his ongoing tensions with fellow artist LAJ, stating that musically, LAJ is “not my class.”
Speaking during a recent media engagement in Sierra Leone, Kao Denero reflected on his influence in the country’s entertainment industry and his role in supporting emerging artists.
“I have put out so many artists who have breakthrough; even though I help some other artists who ended up betraying me, but I never relented,” he said.
The rapper also referenced the Red Flag Movement (RFM), the camp associated with LAJ. According to Kao Denero, he played a key role in LAJ’s rise to prominence, particularly through the remix of the song “Money Na Bank.”
“Even the Red Flag Movement (RFM), LAJ’s breakthrough song, ‘Money Na Bank,’ I am all the remix. I contributed to LAJ’s breakthrough in Sierra Leone’s entertainment industry by opening doors for him, embracing him as one of us,” he stated.
Addressing the reported rift between the two artists, Kao Denero described the situation as one-sided and unfortunate.
“This issue between me and LAJ, I think it is a one sided thing, which is very unfortunate for me because I know where I belong musically,” he said. “I know the people who I am to compete with that are of my class (same level), but regardless, a fam is a fam.”
He further added, “Musically, LAJ is not my class; RFM is a force to reckon with, but Black Leo’s story is different, it is Black Leo that inspires every movement.”
Kao Denero’s comments are the latest in a series of public exchanges that have drawn attention within Sierra Leone’s music industry. While he acknowledged RFM as a strong movement, he maintained that the legacy and influence of Black Leo stand apart.
As of press time, LAJ and representatives of the Red Flag Movement have not publicly responded to Kao Denero’s latest remarks.
