Meet our Woman Crush for this week, Hawantu Sesasy.
Hawantu Sesay is the winner of Orange Sierra Leone’s 2023 Orange Social Venture Prize (OSVP) which took place few weeks back. She was part of the two finalist, alongside James Samba. The auspicious ceremony took place on Friday 4th August at the Limkokwing University Hall.
Hawantu is part of 52 percent of 126 graduates trained under Women’s Digital Centre of Orange Digital Centre, who are doing well. Hawanatu is a graduate of the Orange Digital Centre which has empowered a good number of Sierra Leonean youth.
Hawanatu who is investing in agriculture says: “I will use the money to grow my business, and help others.
Fighting a tough battle with seven other contestants for the position of Tech Queen and later five finalists for the grand price, Hawantu proved her determination to see to the end, giving her best in all aspect to everyone present.
Crowning her as 2023 Tech Woman, she was awarded NLe50, 000 or Le50, 000, 000 (fifty million Leones) for her project, Wi-Agric Tech. Wi-Agric Tech seeks to digitize agriculture by introducing smart farming technologies to increase productivity tenfold. The innovations are timely as Sierra Leone grapples with food insufficiency and carbon pollution.
Hawanatu Sesay with the IOT Plant Monitoring Device won the Orange Tech Queen out of three Finalists. she described the device as one that can detect problems affecting the plants and also proffers solutions. She added that the device will detect pests, soil fertility, moisture level and can automatically takes decision on when to water a plant.
“I was very happy when I was announced winner because I have tried pitching my Ideas two times and this is the third time now. I’m very happy that I have won and never giving up on my dream of establishing a company that would enhance the growth level of plants in Sierra Leone through using IOT Devices,” she states.
