The Ministry of Health Sierra Leone has taken a step to strengthen hospital governance and management by certifying the first cohort of medical practitioners who completed a targeted leadership training programme.
During a brief ceremony, the Minister of Health, Austin Demby, presented certificates to participants, including hospital matrons, secretaries, and medical superintendents, following an intensive three-day course.
The training was delivered in partnership with University of Global Health Equity and Partners In Health Sierra Leone. It forms part of a five-year capacity-building agreement signed earlier this year.
Under the Memorandum of Understanding endorsed by Mustapha Kabba, the programme is expected to train more than 100 hospital administrators and senior staff across the country.
The curriculum focuses on hospital governance, financial management, service delivery models, mentorship, and practical skills transfer. According to the ministry, the initiative aligns with ongoing national health sector reforms and aims to improve accountability, efficient resource use, and patient-centred care in hospitals nationwide.
The ministry and its partners say additional cohorts will be rolled out in the coming months to ensure sustainable institutional strengthening and measurable improvements in hospital performance and patient outcomes.
