A total of fifty-two (52) students graduated from the Sierra Leone Police Wives Vocational and Training Institute at Kingtom Police Barracks on Saturday 13th January 2024.
The graduation ceremony came against the backdrop that the students had completed the theoretical and practical training requirements of the Institute.
In attendance at the ceremony were a galaxy of senior police officers including the Inspector General of Police William Fayia Sellu as the Guest of Honour, parents, and well-wishers.
Addressing graduands and invitees, the Inspector General of Police acknowledged the contribution his predecessors made in establishing an Institution of learning for Police Wives, noting that though their service to the SLP had ended, their legacy still exists and gradually improving. He continued by appreciating his colleagues and senior officers for supporting the Institution in diverse ways. He expressed satisfaction that the students had taken a step to better themselves as they broke societal barriers.
“From the Stone Age to industrialization and now human capacities, as I look at your faces, I see a lot of hope and expectations. The future belongs to those who pursue their dreams; for you, it’s technical advancement. The world we live in today is asking for special needs which are to be met by skilled workers. You have confidence in yourself that’s why you’re here”, the IGP noted.
Fayia Sellu said that some people think if they do not go to university, they will not make it in life. He concluded by appealing that the students should take advantage of the opportunity given to them and utilize it well.
Presenting the Institution’s annual report during the graduation ceremony, the Ag. Principal of the Institute Mrs. Grace Abioseh Fullah congratulated the students for putting in the required efforts to better themselves in various fields such as Solar PV Installation Technology, Electrical Technology, Building & Construction, Tailoring and Dressmaking, Catering, and Hairdressing.
She further elaborated on the need to galvanize more support to address administrative and student concerns as the Institute looks forward to enrolling more students, especially women and disabled, in the coming academic year.
She closed by calling on the public and senior police officers to assist some students with fees and other needs as they strive to empower themselves.
Distribution of certificates and awards to deserving graduates climaxed the ceremony.
