The new Chairman of the Water Resources Committee in Parliament and Chief Whip of the opposition, Hon. Abdul Karim Kamara (AKK), has made it clear that he will take a firm stance against water companies that fail to follow established procedures.
Kamara stressed out serious worry over the current water crisis, stating that the suffering caused by a shortage of safe drinking water is both unbearable and unacceptable. He urged for collaboration among stakeholders to address the situation, underlining that negligence would no longer be accepted.
The Chairman also cautioned water suppliers, particularly those who sell sachet water without following proper protocols, that their businesses would be shut down. He advised all organizations that have yet to comply with the Sierra Leone Standards Bureau’s testing regulations to do so immediately or face serious repercussions.
Chairman Kamara also instructed contractors working on water projects to complete their commitments or risk having their contracts canceled, noting the importance of such projects in President
Bio’s vision for national development.
Members of the committee shared chairman Kamara’s concerns, mourning incomplete water projects in their areas. They agreed to visiting numerous project sites to check that the job is executed in accordance with contractual agreements. The committee focuses mainly on making sure these projects achieve the high standards required.
Water producers and their union are expected to go Parliament to address concerns regarding their operations in the coming days. The Water Resources Committee’s new leadership is committed to holding all stakeholders accountable, with a clear goal of improving access to clean and reliable water for all Sierra Leoneans.
