Human Rights Activist, Edmond Abu, has criticised Sierra Leone’s passport process, accusing the immigration department of issuing thousands of the country’s passports to foreigners.
Abu condemned a recent statement by the immigration boss stating that the Government of Sierra Leone does not acquire anything from the sales of passports in the country, a statement which he believed was not true.
According to him, politicians are gaining from Netpage, the foreign company responsible for the printing of the country’s passports.
He disclosed that Netpage is refusing to pay tax due to the fact that it was brought in by politicians and the system is working in their interest.
He further stated that President Julius Maada Bio vows to change the arrangement once he assumes office, but later follows the trend because his government is benefiting from the company.
He stated that Sierra Leone’s allowing a foreign national to handle its passport shows that the country has no sovereignty, referring Yenga the border between Sierra Leone and Guinea.
